Have you ever looked in the mirror before a big job interview and said to yourself, “I am the best person for this job and I got this.”? Or have you ever pinned a picture of yourself to the wall of when you were 20 years old and 20 pounds thinner and thought to yourself, “I am that person and I look fantastic!”.  These are all affirmations; short, powerful, positive statements declaring what you want to be true, is in fact true. Each time we say them, think them or even hear them, they automatically and involuntarily affect our conscious and subconscious mind.

The beliefs you have about yourself and everything around you are merely habitual thinking patterns that you learned as a child. Many of them work well for you and many do not. Research shows that we have about 150-300 thoughts a minute, and that for most people 80% of these thoughts are negative. That is a whole lot of negativity. The problem with all these negative thoughts is that they can become self-fulfilling, and in our minds, we start to believe we are not good enough, which drags us down in all aspects of our lives. However, when we do the opposite and consciously start thinking positive thoughts, we start chipping away at the negativity and our whole mindset changes.  Affirmations are created to re-program our thought patterns, turning negative, harmful beliefs into positive ones. And when we replace dysfunctional beliefs with our own positive ones, change can come easily and naturally. Most importantly though, affirmative statements help us catch ourselves each time those dark thoughts start creeping in, so we can stop them in their tracks and quickly switch them to positive thoughts. The more we become aware of these moments and can stop the negative thoughts from forming, the more control we have over our thought patterns, until one day those dysfunctional thoughts will be gone altogether.

Now, thinking the way you do does not mean there is something wrong with you. You’ve just never learned how to think and talk. Your parents probably never knew so they couldn’t teach you, and they taught you how to look at life in the way that their parents taught them. As children, we are so obedient that we willingly and whole-heartedly accept our parent’s beliefs about life and we continue to operate under them for our entire lives. Until we are ready to look at those beliefs and examine them, they won’t change. Let’s take an example of money; your father may have said your entire life, “life is hard and money doesn’t grow on trees.” Now without even realizing it, you still have that belief deep inside your consciousness, and until you release that thought, the universe cannot bring you prosperity. A good affirmation to turn that belief around is, “My income is increasing every day.” The beauty of it is, you don’t have to get caught up in how this will happen – that’s not your job. The Universe is very clever and will figure that out for you. All you have to do is turn your negative thoughts into positive ones.

So when you are ready and decide to start using affirmations to manifest real change in your life, there are a few important things to keep in mind.

-the words we say or write in an affirmation have a very influential effect on the subconscious mind so we need to choose them carefully, and we must always say them in the present tense as if they are already happening. For instance, “My project is amazing and I am getting an A on it”.  

-know what you want and be clear and concise; the subconscious mind perceives things in a straightforward manner, “I love this car and it is mine.” If you are at all unsure of what you are saying or having doubts, it will hinder your progress. This is the reason why many do not get results and then lose belief in this power.

- read your affirmation with as much belief and emotion as you can, “I am excellent at what I do!” Emotion is extremely powerful because it raises your vibrational state and makes the attraction process must faster and more efficient.

-repeat your affirmation several times a day, whenever and wherever you can, so that your mind starts believing it. There is really no one-size-fits-all answer on how long you should continue with affirmations in terms of weeks or months – basically do it for as long as it takes. Work with your affirmations until you start seeing changes around you and continue to work with them until you are satisfied that the new thoughts are so engrained in your mind that they are influencing your day to day life.
